NEW INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING GATOR COOLERS

If you have questions email  Questions

Materials

  • 45” or 35" wide all-cotton fabric in “camouflage” or khaki, tan, light cream or black (Army only)
  • One yard will make nine coolers
  • Soaking Crystals (Agrasoke or similar)

 Equipment

  • Scissors or rotary cutter & mat

  •  Ruler or measuring guide

  •  ¼ teaspoon measure

  • Coordinating thread

  • Funnel or plastic tubing (3/4 OD” and 5/8” ID)

  • Tape on your sewing machine at 4”

  • Sewing Machine
  • Optional Serger
  •  Iron & Ironing Board

Directions

If using a rotary cutter:            Fold fabric crosswise, so you have a 9” width and 45” length

                                                  Cut strips 4” deep x 45” long

If using a scissors:                   Fold fabric in half crosswise (22” x 45”) and cut strips 4” x 45”

Fold fabric strips in half so you have a strip 2” x 45”.  If you will be serging, fold the WRONG SIDES together and serge the length.  If you are sewing, fold the strip RIGHT SIDES together, sew the length, turn and press.

Find the center back lengthwise.  Sew (use a regular machine from here on) across the 2” side.

Now, for the filling.  You will be making TWO 4” pockets on EACH SIDE of the center back.  I use a clear vinyl tube 24” long, which is ¾” OD (outside dimension) and 5/8” ID (inside dimension).  I got it a Lowe's or Home Depot for pennies, and it is a life saver!  Otherwise, use a funnel.  I also put a piece of tape 4” from my needle on the machine bed as a guide.

Put the plastic tube (or funnel) in the right side of the strip.  Put ¼ teaspoon of the crystals (NO MORE) into the tube or funnel and shake down into the bottom of this pocket.  Pull the tube up slightly and sew across the 2” strip at the 4” mark.  You have made your first pocket.  Repeat for another pocket on that side of the neckband.  Sew or serge across the end.  Repeat for the other side of the strip.

You might want to sew one cooler, then soak it for 10 to 12 minutes, to check the number of crystals to use.  The cooler must be “full” yet flexible enough to be comfortable around a neck.

I staple the following message on each cooler (or send a Master Message in a box of coolers):

NECK COOLERS – for Neck or Head

  •  Immerse in water from 10 to 60 minutes, until crystals become gel.

  • Tie around head or neck.

  •  Regenerate by soaking one to three minutes.

  •  Do not freeze.

  • Dehydrate to store.

  • Hand wash only with mild soap.

  •  WET CRYSTALS ARE VERY SLIPPERY…take care
